You see above a real guest cabin - our first, and the only one that is insulated - and up the hill in the center is the Main House, where the kitchen, washing machine, phone, Internet, TV/DVR/VCR and CD player, and the library are. The attached porch is the dining area, and there are hammocks to 'check out' along with the books, both of which which we ask you to return when you're done using them.
Welcome to the World Peace Ashram, formerly the Desert Monastery & Retreat Center! We are delighted to share our facilities with you, and hope you will visit us soon.
Here is a listing of our constructions and services:
- Guest cabins - 5 of them, 10' x 12' or 14', with or without a loft
- each has a wooden deck
- each has at least a single bed, sometimes a full bed, sometimes an extra bed in or two in the loft, and we provide pillows, linens and blankets
- Bath House - two-sided (ostensibly Men's & Women's sides) each with a toilet, a sink and a large shower. I thought you wouldn't need hot water, but Kevin insisted on it, and he built it for you
- the Outdoor Classroom, Meditation Ramada or Dhyana Mandir - a 24' x 24' covered wooden platform, excellent for dance or yoga or teaching sessions, and a great place to watch the sun rise in the East
- The Main House - features listed above, with Dining Porch where meals are served 3 times a day, and snacks & water are available most of the day.
- Your food preferences and needs must be communicated to us before your arrival if we are to accommodate special items, as the nearest grocer is a more than 24 miles' drive and does not carry specialty or organic food reliably.
Other than these, everything is in process or does not exist here - we have the Little Colorado River to the south-east, but it often is an underground stream at our location [due to overgrowth of the invasive species of salt cedar - assisting us to clear this would be greatly appreciated!]
We have recently completed the perimeter fencing which allows us to keep the open range cattle at bay, so now we can plant ground cover, re-seed for wildflowers & native grasses, and develop an orchard over time. We have new beehives which we are anxious to populate with honey bees, and we plan eventually to make mead on a small scale to share with our guests.
We are planning to complete a large Labyrinth installation by 2010, and many hours are required to bring this forth from the flood plains ravaged by cattle for many years. Again, your assistance in this project would be much appreciated!
Once all the constructions are completed, we can turn our attention to the Garden (well-established with raised beds and a cedar fence) and the Greenhouse (new) and the variety of Terraces which will watered by recycled gray-water and allow for micro-climates, floral areas, fruit trees, and whatever our imagination let's us do - we welcome you making your mark in this way, by planting a tree or bush or having us do that for you. We are stewards of this land, and Mother Earth has let us know she'd be grateful for a bit more bounty and beauty among us.
